Book earlier than you think you need to

Weekend slots are the first to fill, and the end of the month is the busiest window in the DMV because that is when most leases turn over. If your move is on the last weekend of a month, ask early. A Sunday is usually easier to get than a Saturday, and a mid-month weekend is easier than either.

Weekend building access

Weekend rules cut both ways. Some buildings permit weekend moves with a reserved elevator; others do not staff the loading dock on Sundays at all, and a few prohibit weekend moves entirely. Confirm with your property manager before you commit to a date, and get the elevator reservation in writing if one is required.

Weekend parking is its own problem

Street parking is genuinely harder on weekends in Columbia Heights, Clarendon, Old Town Alexandria and downtown Silver Spring. If your building has a loading zone or a garage, tell us. If it does not, DC, Arlington and Alexandria all have processes for temporary no-parking or moving permits — the earlier you look into it, the better your Saturday goes.
