Alexandria contains some of the most awkward and some of the easiest moves in the region, sometimes on the same street. An Old Town townhouse with a narrow historic staircase and no driveway is a genuinely technical job. A Carlyle high-rise with a loading dock is not. We are an educator-led crew working across the city seven days a week, and we plan around which one you have.
The blocks east of Washington Street are the hardest moves in Alexandria and the ones most worth getting right. Expect narrow streets with parking on both sides, houses with no driveway and often no alley, front steps up from the sidewalk, interior staircases built long before anyone owned a sectional, and in places cobblestone that a loaded four-wheel dolly does not enjoy. Two things make the difference: knowing in advance which large pieces have to be disassembled, and having somewhere legal for the van to sit. The city has a process for temporary parking reservations for moves — check the current requirements and lead time before you fix a date.
Del Ray and Rosemont are mostly detached houses and bungalows on smaller lots, many with driveways or rear alley access and far more forgiving stairs. Basements here range from finished living space to low-ceilinged storage with a bulkhead entrance, and the latter is worth mentioning when you request a quote. Street parking is generally available but tightens in the evenings when residents get home, so an 8:00 AM weekend start is often the smoother option.
The newer apartment and condo buildings around Carlyle, Eisenhower Avenue and Potomac Yard, and the larger complexes out at Landmark and along Duke Street, work like Arlington towers: reserved elevators, interior loading bays, posted move hours and building documentation. They are efficient moves once the paperwork is settled. Ask your management office about permitted hours before choosing an evening slot.
Not an exhaustive list — if your neighborhood is not named, ask.

Before you set a date, ask your building or property manager three questions: what hours moves are permitted, whether the elevator or dock must be reserved, and what documentation they require from a moving company. Those three answers shape the whole plan.

Local questions
That is the first thing to solve. Some blocks allow a temporary parking reservation for moves through the city — check the current process and lead time. Otherwise we work from the nearest legal space, and a long carry over 75 feet adds $35.
Often, with the legs off and a plan. Send us the staircase width at its narrowest point and the sofa dimensions before the date and we will tell you honestly whether it will go.
Yes, across the whole city. The large complexes out there are usually straightforward, elevator-served moves.
For Old Town, a weekend morning — parking is easier and you are not competing with residents coming home. For an elevator building, whichever window your management office permits.
We publish real completed moves here — what the job was, how long it took and what it cost — once we have done them in this area and have the customer's permission to describe the work. Nothing invented goes on this page.
