FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers, including to the questions where the honest answer is "not yet". If something you need is not here, call or text us.

General

What areas do you serve?

Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland — the DMV. We publish a page for each activated service area with local detail. If your address is outside an activated area, ask us and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.

Pricing

How much does a move cost?

A van and crew is $159 per hour with a three-hour minimum, so moves with a van start at $477. Labor-only help is $119 per hour with a two-hour minimum, starting at $238. Single-item delivery starts at $149, packing at $119 per hour and furniture assembly at $89. These are starting estimates — your written quote is the number that counts.

When does the clock start and stop?

On arrival at your pickup address, and it stops when the last item is placed at your destination. Drive time between your two addresses is on the clock; our travel to your first address is not.

Are there hidden fees?

No. Every additional charge we might apply — stairs, long carry, heavy items, extra stops, additional crew, mileage, materials, tolls — is listed on your estimate before you book and again on your written final quote.

Scheduling

When are you available?

Weekday evenings from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM and weekends from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Availability is subject to your building’s permitted move hours, which are often the real constraint.

Do you charge more for evenings or weekends?

No. Those are our normal working hours, so they are billed at standard rates.

Do you offer same-day or last-minute moves?

We do not currently advertise same-day or last-minute service. Send a request and we will tell you honestly what is available.

How far in advance should I book?

As early as you can, especially for the last weekend of a month, which is when most DMV leases turn over and when weekend slots fill first.

Booking

Is my move booked when I submit the quote form?

No. Submitting a request starts the process. We review it, send you a written final quote, and your move is booked once you accept that quote and pay the booking deposit.

How much is the deposit?

$100, applied to your final balance. It is requested only after we have reviewed your request and sent the final quote — never when you first submit the form.

What is your cancellation policy?

Provisionally: fully refundable at least 48 hours before the move, 50% refundable 24 to 48 hours before, and nonrefundable inside 24 hours. This policy is marked provisional and is subject to change before launch — the terms confirmed on your written quote are the ones that apply to your booking.

Trust

Are you licensed and insured?

We do not display licensing, insurance or bonding claims on this website, because we only publish credentials we can evidence. If your building or your situation requires specific documentation, ask us during the quote process and we will tell you plainly what we can provide today.

Are your crew members background-checked?

We do not currently make that claim publicly, and we will not until a verification process is in place and documented. Crew applicants consent to identity, employment and background verification as part of applying, and we will publish the specifics only once the process is genuinely running.

What makes an educator-led crew different?

Preparation, patience, communication and follow-through — the parts of a move customers most often find missing. Being an educator does not by itself make someone a mover, which is why every crew member completes moving, lifting, equipment, safety and customer-service training before taking assignments.

Why do you not show reviews or ratings?

Because we have not earned them yet. We are new, and we would rather show you an empty section than fabricate one. Genuine reviews from real customers will appear here as we complete moves.

Services

Do you drive my rental truck?

No. With labor-only help you provide and drive the vehicle; we load, unload and place. We do not drive customer-provided trucks or trailers and we do not tow.

What can you not move?

Hazardous materials, firearms and ammunition, illegal substances, open food, unsecured liquids, anything containing fuel, and extremely valuable artwork, jewelry or collectibles. Pianos, safes and extremely heavy items need approval in advance, as do interstate or long-distance jobs. The full list is on our services pages.

Do you do long-distance or interstate moves?

Not as an advertised service. Those require different authority and equipment. Ask us and we will tell you honestly rather than taking a booking we should not.

Do you provide packing materials?

We can bring boxes, paper, tape and wrap, charged at cost and itemized on your quote. Many customers save money by sourcing free boxes locally and having us bring only materials.

Community

What happens to the $20 community contribution?

It comes out of what we earn on the job — it is never added to your bill. After a move is marked complete, $20 is set aside toward classroom supplies and support for local teachers in the DMV. Teachers Who Move is a for-profit business, not a nonprofit, so your payment is for moving services and is not tax-deductible.
