A county of very different moves

Downtown Silver Spring, Bethesda and North Bethesda are high-rise: reserved elevators, garage loading, building documentation. Rockville and Gaithersburg add large garden-apartment and townhouse communities where the job is stairs and surface parking. Takoma Park, Kensington and Chevy Chase are older single-family neighborhoods — bungalows and colonials with driveways, narrow interior staircases and, often, an attic bedroom or a finished basement that adds a flight. Wheaton and Aspen Hill sit in between. Tell us the address and the floor and the estimate follows from there.

Older homes, narrower stairs

The pre-war and mid-century houses in Takoma Park, Kensington and parts of Silver Spring have the same characteristic as DC rowhouses: staircases with a landing turn that large upholstered furniture struggles with. If you have a sectional, a sleeper sofa or an oversized mattress, measure the tightest point on the stairs before your move date. It is a two-minute job that prevents the most common move-day problem there is.

Townhouse communities and HOA rules

Much of the county’s newer housing is three-level townhouses in managed communities. Bedrooms two flights up drive the hours, and the community itself may have rules on move hours, guest parking and where a vehicle can stand. Ask your HOA or management office before you set a date.

Common property types here

  • High-rise apartments and condos in the downtown cores
  • Garden-style apartment complexes
  • Three-level townhouses in HOA communities
  • Pre-war and mid-century single-family homes
  • Basement apartments and in-law suites
  • Senior and assisted-living communities

Access, parking and loading

  • Reserved freight elevators and garage loading in downtown buildings
  • Narrow staircases with landing turns in older homes
  • Attic bedrooms and finished basements adding a flight
  • HOA move rules in townhouse communities
  • Generally good driveway and surface parking outside the downtown cores
  • Longer drive distances between the up-county and down-county ends

Before you set a date, ask your building or property manager three questions: what hours moves are permitted, whether the elevator or dock must be reserved, and what documentation they require from a moving company. Those three answers shape the whole plan.

What we can do in Montgomery County, MD

Local questions

Moving in Montgomery County, MD — frequently asked

Do you cover the whole county?

We take bookings across the county. For up-county addresses, mileage beyond 15 miles between your two addresses is $2.50 per mile and will be shown on your estimate.

Are Silver Spring and Bethesda covered here?

Both have their own pages with more local detail, and both are part of the county service area.

My house is from the 1940s and the stairs turn. Is that a problem?

Not if we know in advance. Measure the tightest point and your largest piece of furniture and send us both, and we will plan a route or a disassembly rather than discovering it on the day.

Can you move a senior parent into an assisted-living community?

Yes, and those moves are usually small and well suited to us. Communities typically have their own move-in procedures and hours — send them to us with your request.
