Weekend moving in the DMV

Why the last Saturday of the month is the hardest date to book, and what to do about it.

Why weekends fill first

Most people cannot take a weekday off to move, so Saturday and Sunday are the first days to go on any mover's calendar — and the last weekend of the month is the first thing to disappear entirely, because that is when leases turn over across the whole region.

The practical consequence is lead time. If your date is fixed and it is a weekend near a month boundary, book several weeks out. If your date is flexible, the middle of the month is easier to fill and easier to reschedule if something slips.

Worth knowing: a weekend booking does not cost more with us. We work seven days a week from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM at the same rate, so choosing a Saturday is a scheduling decision rather than a financial one.

Weekend building access

This is the trap. Plenty of buildings that allow moves on weekdays restrict or prohibit them at the weekend, and the management office is usually closed when you find out.

Ask before you book: are moves permitted on Saturday, on Sunday, and between which hours? Who is on site to open the loading dock or release the freight elevator, and what is their number? If the office is closed, who signs for the certificate of insurance?

A freight elevator that needs a staff member to key it into service is useless on a Sunday if no staff member is scheduled. Confirm that a human will be there, not just that the policy permits it.

In a rowhouse, a condo without a front desk, or a single-family home, none of this applies and a weekend is simply easier — quieter streets, more parking, no commuter traffic.

Weekend parking in the busy neighborhoods

Weekend parking in the District cuts both ways. Commuter pressure drops, residential streets fill up because everyone is home, and the neighborhoods with weekend destinations get worse rather than better.

An early start is the single most effective tactic. A 7:00 or 8:00 AM Saturday start in Adams Morgan, U Street, Del Ray or downtown Silver Spring gets you a spot near the door that will not exist by eleven.

If you are in a permit-parking block and want reserved space at the curb, temporary no-parking signage is arranged through the relevant city or county transportation office, and the requirements and lead times differ between DC, Arlington, Alexandria, Montgomery County and Prince George's County. Check with the office for your jurisdiction directly — the rules change, and we would rather you had the current answer than ours.

If reserved space is not realistic, tell your mover the likely carry distance so it is in the plan instead of a surprise.

Traffic and timing

Weekend traffic in this region is not commuter traffic, it is event and errand traffic, and it builds late morning rather than at rush hour. Anything crossing a bridge, running along the Beltway, or passing near a stadium, a market or a festival can lose you a lot of billable time.

Starting early avoids most of it. It also means the truck is loaded before the day gets hot in summer, which matters more than people expect.

If your move crosses the river or the Beltway, mention it when you book so the drive time is in the estimate rather than a variable discovered on the day. And check whether anything large is scheduled near either address — a road race or a parade closes streets on a Saturday morning with no regard for your lease.

What fits in a weekend day

For a two-person crew with a van and good access: a studio or a few rooms of furniture is comfortably a morning. A one-bedroom is most of a morning. A two-bedroom is most of a day. A three-bedroom house with stairs at both ends is a full day and sometimes more, and is the size where a third crew member usually pays for itself.

Add time for every flight of stairs, for a long carry, for an elevator you have to share, and for not being fully packed.

If the honest answer is that it does not fit in one day, splitting it across a Saturday and a Sunday is often calmer and no more expensive than forcing it, since the billing is hourly either way. What you should not do is book a window that assumes everything goes right, because move days rarely do.
